We are studying and preparing for our CRT's next week. Please make sure your child is on time, well fed, and rested. Testing is done on the computer! No more bubbling score sheets - Yes! But, if they miss a day it will be extremely hard to make it up. We are having fun writing poetry and putting our poems into a book for our Mom and Me Poetry Tea.

We are working hard to finish our animal research reports. We love using the new mobile lab to work at our desks the results will look professional! We are looking forward to our banana split party for our multiplication facts that have been memorized. The party will be Thursday at 2:00. Our room mothers are the best. Thanks for all the organizing and shopping and giving of your time!!

April Book Report

Report Due April 26th

Traditional Story Sandwich Book Reports

Traditional stories are ones that were passed down orally for many generations before being written down.  They include fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales, legends, fables, and myths.  In the Public Library, these books are found in the children's nonfiction section under call numbers beginning with J398.2Students are required to choose a book from this section of the library.
The stories are many and varied, familiar or new, and rich with cultural heritage and moral themes.  I hope the students will take advantage of the wonderful opportunity they have to explore this genre.  We are certainly enjoying studying the books together at school! Below are a few examples:

March Happenings

Our class has many fun things we are working on in March. We are still working on passing off our Multiplication Facts and getting ready for the ice cream party in April. We are looking forward to listening to their Current Event Reports. Their February poster reports on a famous person have been fabulous! Their public speaking skills have improved by leaps and bounds from the beginning of the year! They actually look at their audience and speak and explain things to them! Our most exciting event for March is our Third Grade Program. We will be performing for the parents on Thursday, March 29th at 2:00. We hope to see you there!

February News

We are still working hard on our Multiplication and Division Facts! Check out the schedule on the class blog and watch for the progress reports to come home to find out if your student is on track.

Thank you to our awesome room parents who volunteer and help in our class all the time. We know that our Valentine's party will be a blast. Mrs. Johnson is teaching Jr. Achievement on Fridays.  We are having fun learning about communities. Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Call have taught this last round of Art Through The Ages.  It has been interesting to learn about China and do calligraphy. Thank you to the parents who help with homework parties and who come every Friday to volunteer in the classroom! You make a difference and the kids love you!!!

Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. Be sure to use the online scheduler on Altara's home page. I really do enjoy meeting with you and talking about your child's progress!

This month we have a biography book report due on the 23rd. Please make sure to read all about it in the homework folder. There is even an example of one to look at. These are supposed to be a fun learning experience that exposes them to different varieties of books.

January News

We are having so much fun learning our multiplication facts. By the end of this week the students should have passed off X 10's and earned their first scoop of ice cream. Most of the students have already passed off their 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.
We are having fun learning learning about heat and light in science. We are doing interesting experiments about heat. We are learning about what keeps us warm and about how to read thermometers. Some of our new vocabulary words are conduct, insulate, and friction.
We are looking forward to starting Junior Achievement with Mrs. Johnson.

New Year - 2012

Welcome to 2012! It always helps to review the past to make the future better - right! So... I'm going to do better at my posts on the class blog. We will not be closing the blog because I won't be posting personal individual pictures or individual work.  I will still take pictures but the kids can access them at the end of the year and make their own CD.

Thank you to Sandy Rotary Club! They gave every third grader their own dictionary! Wow! We will be using them at school until June and then they will bring them home for their own personal use.

Multiplication Facts - Banana Split Party Here We Come! This note is coming home Monday but here it is just in case you need to refer to it later.

Dear Parents,
We’re now beginning one of the most important computation concepts for your third grader this year: multiplication!  Future math concepts will be taught with the assumption that the students have mastered these basic facts.  Below is the schedule for passing off facts.  Please post it so that you can help your child master them.

Procedure:
We will be studying and practicing multiplication/division fact families at school according to the schedule below. Math drills will be given daily with the opportunity to pass off fact families 1-2 times per week.  Students may work at their own pace, but should try to keep up with the class schedule as much as possible.  Automaticity is the goal!

Homework:
For the next few months, math homework will center around practicing multiplication facts.  Students may use flashcards, websites, or other practice strategies that work well for them. There are many ways to memorize math facts.  Your child should also continue reviewing facts that he/she has already learned. Websites for games and worksheets can be found under “Multiplication Rocks” on the class blog and flashcards are available upon request.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  We’ll be celebrating the children’s success with an Ice Cream Party after Spring Break. Good luck, students!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Hadean
